I needed a RIM light stand for my videos and this stand is absolutely overkill. Super heavy duty. Built to last, the spring action is so much superior to any other stand iv used in the past….. I know I’m just putting a small weight on it right now but this stand can handle 100x more weight then my little tube LED video RIM light. The stand can stretch all the way to my freaking ceiling!!! Iv never seen a stand this good, and this sturdy, at this price. 100/100! Would recommend to everyone looking for a light stand, microphone stand, boom mic stand, lantern light stand, softbox stand. Only thing bad I would say is if it came with a 1/4 swivel ball then it would be perfect. I had to purchase a 1/4 swivel ball mount separately but that is just because I’m using it as a adjustable RIM light stand.

Very lightweight, you can put this almost anywhere and it will fit, almost not realizing it is there because it is so light. It is easy to fold and put up. I have the boom and the tripod all connected and everything is flush with itself so it would be easily portable like this. Fits in its bag great like that also. I love the boom too, it mounted right on the screw and it tilts up and down easily. Would hold a lighter mic real easy and with weight on the other end that would help it be more stable too. It is light and easily movable so the thumb levers for tightening need to be tight to keep it from moving on its own. Also need to balance it well because as light as it is I had some weight pull it over in testing so I had to remove some sand for more testing and a better weight balance.

For a lightweight LED, boom mic, GoPro, etc, this is a great lightweight stand with a boom pole. This is NOT in the league of a c-stand, so if you need to fly a heavy light, get a c-stand, but for lightweight needs, this is super nice. I made a short video that hopefully explains all of the features, and also shows that you need to stay within the recommended weight limit to be safe.

The hook and sandbag works very well in balancing heavy light.

This light stand is sturdy and feels durable but it is also very lightweight and easy to maneuver. It can be used with or without the included boom arm. The boom arm was the main reason I wanted this stand and it doesn’t disappoint. Its great for holding an overhead light and the arm is extendable so you can easily keep the stand clear of your frame. The boom has a padded grip on one end and a locking lever where it attaches to the stand so you can quickly pivot the arm.

What I really like: Everything is well made and heavy duty. Clamps, supports, everything except the feet caps – metal. It’s all sturdy. The stand can be used stand-alone or with the boom. Even the lock-levers on the stand column segments are metal! This thing will last a lifetime.

What I don’t like: The camp mechanism for the boom is friction based. No ratchet, no teeth. The end of the boom has no hook and no way to hang or attach a weight. So if you extend the boom fully and use a typical light and diffuser, the thing gets really top-heavy – a counterweight would be really, really handy. So – no teeth to really grab on the lock and no way to use weights.

But even so, it’s a solid 4 stars. Use a lighter head and reflector and you can drape a sandbag over a leg and really crank the lock. Or you can strap a small sandbag on as a counterweight.

I was very impressed with the build quality of this SmallRig light stand. It’s all metal (including the telescoping locks) except for the pivot lock on the boom arm. When properly set up, with the leg spreaders fully extended, it comes up a little shy of the stated 9.2 feet (you can get to 9.2 feet if you set it up so that the leg spreaders aren’t fully extended, but that is not recommeded, expecially if you are using the boom arm). These stands are perfect for replacing the really cheap stands that come with the Neewer or GVC light panels. The boom arm lends a lot of vesatility to the stand, but becuase the lock for the boom arm works by friction (rather than metal teeth that grab a ridged circular cam), you really have to be careful about the load when using the boom arm. The boom arm is ideal for a shotgun mic in talking head videos, but I wouldn’t strust it with a COB light ans a softbox (although the stand without the boom arm is fine for this application). Finally, the air cushion feature is a real plus, especially at this price point.
This stand is very similar in construction to the SmallRig RA-S280-3736 model, which is essentially the same stand without the boom. In all, the quality of this SmallRig light stand is excellent for the price.

This light stand solved one of my big issues in my studio. I have several lights that I need to be near the ceiling, be stable with softboxes and I want them out of the way, so I don’t accidentally knock them over and break an expensive light. This light stand you can position a light pretty far from where the base is, you can get it high and out of the way, and it is simple and easy to set up. This is exactly what I was looking for.

The build on the stands is better than I expected and it comes with a nice weight bag that you need once you get heavy lights in the air and away from the base. All the adjustment handles were large and easy to work. It’s a great product, I will definitely seek out this brand in the future.
